Welcome to the West Michigan Whitecaps, a professional minor league baseball team. They are a member of the Midwest League and 1 of 16 teams. They are an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play 140 games each season, 70 home and 70 road. Their home ballpark is Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, MI. This is a private owned stadium build alongside the establishment of the Whitecaps in 1994. The Whitecaps are co-owned by Lew Chamberlin and Dennis Baxter, both local businessmen.
The Whitecaps received their name from a team naming contest in West Michigan. With over 1,800 fans entering in the contest and over 100 names given, the name Whitecaps was chosen. The winner of the contest won two season tickets for 1994's season along with a team jacket and a night luxury suite.
